Client News: Lancaster General Has Plans for $15M Chester County Facility

Source: Daily Local News
Written by: GRETCHEN METZ, Staff Writer
The hospital is seeking final approval from Sadsbury supervisors to build a outpatient facility on the southeast corner of routes 30 and 10. Hospital officials and the property’s developer, The Provco Group of Villanova, are scheduled for the supervisors’ August meeting.
Once final approvals are in hand, the next step will be filing applications for building and other permits.
The yet-to-be-named outpatient facility is a $15 million investment for Lancaster General, and the hospital’s second Chester County location.
In April 2010, the hospital opened the Lancaster General Health Express, an urgent care center in the Walmart Supercenter at the West Sadsbury Commons, on the southwest corner of routes 30 and 10.
At the express, certified registered nurse practitioners provide treatment for common illnesses such as sinus infections, earaches, strep throat and rashes, as well as health screenings, immunizations and physicals for sports activities, camps and schools.
Lancaster General has trained its focus on western Chester County because of its residential growth.
“One of the fastest growing areas in the region is along the Routes 30 and 10 corridor, where Lancaster and Chester Counties meet,” said Susan Wynne, senior vice president for business development at Lancaster General Health.
“The population is projected to grow by 7 percent and many residents in the community have expressed the need for better access to health-care services.
“This center will fulfill the need for more health care, from primary care to medical specialists and outpatient services that will be convenient to where people live.”
The planned outpatient center will be situated behind Hershey Motors in an area currently farm fields.
It will house physician offices, areas for blood draws and pre-surgery tests, a diagnostics area for X-rays and ultrasounds, and space for pulmonary testing and physical rehabilitation, said Joe Donaldson, strategic implementation engineer at Lancaster General.
The radiology department will be built with enough space to add imaging capabilities such as MRIs and CTs in the future, Donaldson said.
In addition, the outpatient center will offer physician-based urgent care for non-life-threatening conditions such as sprains and infections. That will be a step up from the nurse practitioner-based urgent care offered across the street at the Health Express.
The 36,000-square-foot, two-floor facility will also have a community conference room that can be used for community education, Donaldson said. Both floors will have ground-level entrances.
No date has been set for groundbreaking but Donaldson hopes for late fall to get work under way before winter sets in. Failing that, work will begin in the spring.
Access to the outpatient facility will be from Route 10, initially.
Route 10 highway improvements include turning lanes and road widening, said Frieda Schmidt, Lancaster General spokeswoman. In the future, the access road will be extended from Route 10 and intersect with Route 30 east of the routes 10 and 30 intersection.
The 63-acre site is being developed by Provco, which owns the land.
The outpatient facility is Phase I for the site, said W. Kent Silvers Jr., assistant vice president at Provco. Phase II will be a retail component. As yet, there is no timeline for Phase II, Silvers said.
Both township officials and the developer said residents have not voiced concerns about the outpatient center.
“The community is all for it. They have embraced the idea,” Silvers said, adding that having urgent care available means a parent who has a child with a fever on a Saturday night will now have a convenient place to take the child for treatment instead of a hospital emergency room.
Lancaster General’s plans have not escaped the attention of Brandywine Hospital, which is located less than 10 miles from the proposed development.
“As the closest hospital and primary provider of inpatient and outpatient services to the Parkesburg area, Brandywine Hospital will continue to meet the medical needs of this community,” said Bryan D. Burklow, Brandywine’s CEO. “ ... We work closely with our physicians to give their patients access to advanced services including cardiology, emergency, robotic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and behavioral health. The community has relied on Brandywine Hospital for many years and can count on us to meet their healthcare needs for generations to come.”

Client News: Tom Beeman announces return as LG Health CEO

It has been nearly eight months since I assumed the role of deputy commander for the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, National Naval Medical Center (NICoE) in Bethesda, MD. Leading this center and helping servicemen and women recover from complex traumatic brain injury have been both a humbling and rewarding experience.
Now, it is time to return home. I am pleased and eager to report that my Navy Reserve duty will end later this month and that I will rejoin Lancaster General Health as President & Chief Executive Officer, and President of Lancaster General Hospital, beginning Tuesday, July 5.
I would like to thank the Medical and Dental Staff for your unwavering dedication to delivering extraordinary care to our patients and their families. Your commitment to our Mission, to your colleagues and our community continues to provide a solid foundation for our high-quality and compassionate care.
I am grateful to our Board of Trustees, its chairman Alex Henderson, and members of our leadership team who guided our organization through what are increasingly challenging times in healthcare.
I want to thank Jan Bergen for skillfully serving as our health system’s CEO in my absence, keeping the health system moving forward and focused on carrying out our Mission and the goals outlined in our Strategic Plan. I am also appreciative of Marion McGowan’s leadership as the hospital’s President and system’s Chief Operating Officer, particularly the critical guidance she and Gary Davidson provided this past year that resulted in the recent successful e-Health Go Live. My thanks too to Susan Wynne, who assumed the responsibilities of Chief Mission Officer and ensured our distinctive commitment to the health and well-being of the communities continued without interruption.
In the upcoming months, I look forward to sharing some of the many clinical, operational and leadership insights I gained while leading the NICoE. The center combines the most advanced equipment and facilities with a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat brain injury and other psychological disorders. My time there provided invaluable knowledge from which LG Health can benefit.
I wish you well in the weeks ahead and look forward to seeing everyone next month.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Beeman

Client News: Lancaster General Health Recognized as Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania

Source: Lancaster General Health News Release

Lancaster General Health was named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for 2010, ranking 36 among the top 50 companies in the large company category.

The recognition was announced during the Best Places to Work in PA awards ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster. The awards program, created in 2000, is one of the first statewide programs of its kind in the country. The program is a public/private partnership between Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and the Central Penn Business Journal.

This survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places to be employed in Pennsylvania, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. In the past, employers were categorized based upon the number of employees they had in Pennsylvania. This year, employers were categorized based upon the total number of employees they have in the United States. This change was made to ensure the proper alignment of organizations and to avoid naming large national employers to the small/medium list simply because they have fewer employees based in Pennsylvania. This change did not have any impact on which organizations made the list, just how they were categorized.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

- Have at least 25 employees in Pennsylvania;
- Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business;
- Be a publicly or privately held business;
- Have a facility in Pennsylvania; and
- Be in good standing with Commonwealth agencies under the Governor’s jurisdiction.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. The first part of this process was evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process.

But a few hospitals have embraced something else. The App. The following Unibased customers have rolled out their own Apps geared towards informing their patient base. Have to go the emergency room - check wait times on your phone. Not feeling well - not sure what it might be, check your symptoms. Looking for a doctor - you can not only find a name - but you can get the doctor's location within the hospital system, and in some cases, request an appointment all from the touch of a finger.

On Oct. 21, the LG Health Board of Trustees will grant Beeman a sabbatical and appoint him the position of Strategic Advisor to the Board. In that capacity, he will remain on the LG Health Board of Trustees and continue to report to the Trustees and its Chairman, Alexander Henderson III.

Since Beeman became CEO in 2005, the LG Health Board of Trustees had prepared for the possibility of his being called to active duty. During his absence, the Board has appointed Executive Vice President Jan Bergen as CEO of the LG Health system, and Executive Vice President Marian McGowan as system Chief Operating Officer and President of Lancaster General Hospital (LGH). Their appointments will be officially voted on Oct. 21.

Bergen and McGowan, who have decades of executive leadership in healthcare and previously served as hospital CEOs, will also serve as members of the Boards of Trustees of LG Health and Lancaster General Hospital.

“We consider the U.S. Navy’s decision an honor for both Tom and LG Health,” said Alexander Henderson. “It speaks highly of his leadership, ethics and experience in addressing complex healthcare issues. Client News: LGH is an ENERGY STAR

Source: Lancaster General Press Release

Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) is the only hospital in Pennsylvania and one of only 12 hospitals in the United States to earn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious ENERGY STAR designation to date in 2010.

This national mark of excellence in energy performance means LGH performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency. The hospital received an overall rating of 76 on an energy efficiency scale of zero to 100.

"In 2009, with looming electrical deregulation and the uncertainty of healthcare reform, we decided to initiate a major review of the hospital's infrastructure with ENERGY STAR in mind," said John Hartman, senior director, Facilities Management, LGH. "We partnered with GE and other business partners to perform an intense three-day energy 'treasure hunt' uncovering more than 100 opportunities for improvement."

Commercial buildings earning the ENERGY STAR, or label, use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. LGH improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to the hospital.

With leadership team support, LGH took on the ENERGY STAR challenge and has set the goal of reducing energy consumption by 10 percent. A variety measures led to success:

Developed a lighting control and water conservation program

Re-insulated piping to prevent heat loss

Identified opportunities to recycle water sources and implemented a steam trap replacement program

Replaced a 1964 low-efficiency chiller (air and equipment cooling system) with a higher efficiency

Collaboration with hospital colleagues to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption in individual areas.

"Using ENERGY STAR benchmarking gave us easy access to the tools and resources EPA provides that are needed to measure our facilities,” said Larry Dunn, director, Facilities Management. “We look forward to carrying out our energy reduction initiatives while providing a safe, sustainable environment for our patients, families, visitors and staff."
